How to Measure Yourself for a Modest Maxi Dress
Most returns aren't because the dress was wrong. They're because nobody knew what size to order, guessed, and guessed badly.
Five minutes with a soft tape measure fixes that. Here's how.
What you need
A soft fabric tape measure — not a builder's tape. If you don't own one, a piece of string and a ruler works: wrap the string, mark it, measure it flat.
Measure over close-fitting clothing, not over an abaya, and don't pull the tape tight. Snug, not compressing.
The four measurements
Bust. Around the fullest part, tape level all the way round and flat across your back. This is the number that decides whether a fitted bodice works.
Waist. The narrowest part of your torso, usually just above the belly button. Breathe out normally — don't hold it in.
Hip. The fullest part, usually about 20cm below your waist. Feet together.
Height, shoulder to floor. This is the one most size charts leave out and it's the one that decides whether a maxi dress works on you. Stand against a wall in bare feet, have someone measure from the top of your shoulder straight down to the floor.
Reading a size chart properly
Compare your measurements to the chart, not your usual size. Sizing varies enormously between brands, and "I'm a medium" is not a measurement.
If you fall between sizes: for a fitted or slim-fit dress, size up. For an A-line, fit-and-flare or loose cut, take the smaller size — the shape has room built in.
If your measurements land in different sizes — bust in one, hip in another — go with the larger for fitted styles, and with the bust measurement for anything that flares from the waist.
The length question
This is where online ordering usually goes wrong.
"Floor-length" is measured on a model. If she's 5'10" and you're 5'2", the same dress will pool at your feet.
Always look for the model's height and the size she's wearing. Good listings state both. If a dress is floor-length on someone 5'10", it will sit at or past the ankle on most people — which for a modest maxi is what you want, and means no hemming.
If a listing doesn't tell you, ask before you order.
What to check beyond the numbers
Is it lined? An unlined maxi in a light colour will be transparent in daylight regardless of fit.
Where does the waistband sit? An empire waist sits under the bust and suits most shapes. A defined natural waist is more fitted and less forgiving between sizes.
Do the sleeves push up? Elastic cuffs move cleanly for wudu and stay where you put them. Wide bell sleeves often don't.
How does it fasten? A pull-over dress needs enough room at the bust to go over your head. A back zip doesn't, but you'll need to reach it.
