How to Shop Modest Fashion Online Without Guessing
Buying modest clothing online is harder than buying anything else, because the things that decide whether a garment works — opacity, length, how a sleeve moves — are exactly the things photographs don't show.
Here's what to check, and what it means when a listing doesn't mention it.
1. Is it lined?
The single most important question, and the most often unanswered.
If a listing doesn't say lined, assume it isn't. An unlined maxi in a light colour is transparent in daylight regardless of how it photographs.
2. Model height and size
"Floor-length" means nothing without knowing whose floor. A dress that's floor-length on someone 5'10" sits differently on someone 5'2".
Good listings state both the model's height and the size she's wearing. If they don't, ask before ordering.
3. Actual dimensions
For hijabs: length and width in centimetres. For khimars: head to shoulder.
"One size" without measurements is a seller who doesn't want you to know.
4. How the sleeves behave
Look at the cuff in the photo. Elastic gather, button or defined cuff means it pushes up and stays. A wide open hem means it won't.
5. Fabric named specifically
"Premium fabric" is not a fabric. Chiffon, modal, jersey, nida, crepe, linen — each behaves differently, and a seller who won't name it usually has a reason.
6. The returns policy, before you add to cart
Not after. Hijabs, swimwear and prayer garments are commonly final sale for hygiene reasons — that's normal. Clothing being final sale is not.
If a $180 gown can't be returned, that's a risk you're taking rather than one the seller is.
7. Whether you can ask a human
The best signal of all. A seller confident in what they're selling will tell you the measurements, describe the drape honestly, and say when something runs small.
A phone number that a person answers is worth more than any product description.
The questions worth asking before you buy
- Is it see-through in daylight?
- What's the actual length on someone my height?
- Does it run true to size?
- Do the sleeves push up?
- Is the colour accurate on screen?
Any seller who can't answer those quickly probably hasn't handled the garment.
