Khimar or Prayer Set? Choosing Prayer Coverage That Works
Khimar, isdal, prayer set, salah outfit — different families use different words for overlapping things, which makes shopping confusing. Here's what each garment actually is.
Khimar
Covers head to shoulder or chest, worn over your own clothing. You're still dressed underneath; the khimar adds the covering.
Single or double layer. Double layer is the one worth paying for. Two layers means genuine opacity — no light through the crown and nothing needed underneath.
Length matters. Look for the measurement from top of head to shoulder. Around 38cm is a good working length: long enough to cover properly, short enough not to catch under your knees in sujood.
Best for: praying at home, at the mosque, anywhere you're already dressed appropriately and just need the covering.
One-piece prayer outfit
Covers everything in a single garment, worn over whatever you happen to have on. Pyjamas, a short-sleeved top, anything.
Best for: answering the door, praying somewhere you can't control what's underneath, travel, and the mornings when speed matters more than anything.
The face opening decides everything
A fixed opening is cut to one face shape. If yours is different, it gapes or swallows you.
A wrap headpiece lets you set the fit around your own face — frames you properly, and stays there. No hair slipping out mid-prayer, no restarting because you weren't sure.
What to check before you buy
- Opacity. Thin fabric over pyjamas defeats the purpose. Thick and fully opaque.
- Breathability. Matters when the mosque is warm or you're travelling.
- Grip. It shouldn't slide back off your crown when you sit up from sujood.
- Cut through the skirt. Enough width that the hem doesn't catch under your knees.
- Packs flat. If it doesn't fold small, it stays home.
Why most women own both
A khimar for home, where you're already dressed. A one-piece by the door and in the car, for everything else.
We've sold over 10,000 salah outfits and the pattern holds: most women don't stop at one, and they come back for the colours.
