Maxi Cardigans and Dusters: The Most Useful Layer You'll Own
A maxi cardigan is the piece that makes the rest of your wardrobe work. It covers what needs covering, layers over anything, and turns a short-sleeved top into an outfit.
The difference between one you wear constantly and one that stays on the hanger comes down to four things.
Non-sheer, or it doesn't work
The whole point is coverage. A cardigan you can see through covers nothing, and no amount of styling fixes it.
Check the description says non-sheer explicitly. If it doesn't mention it, assume it is.
Long enough to matter
Past the knee at minimum. A cardigan that stops at the hip is a jacket — useful, but it isn't doing the job.
Buttons that continue past the knee mean you can wear it fully closed as a dress in its own right.
Elastic cuffs
They push up cleanly for wudu and stay there. Wide open cuffs fall straight back down and drag through everything.
A drawstring or belt
Lets you set the fit. Open and loose over jeans; drawn in at the waist over a dress. One garment, two silhouettes.
How to wear it
Open, over jeans and a top. Weekend. The cardigan does all the work.
Closed, drawstring pulled in. Reads as a dress. Add heels for an occasion.
Open, over a maxi dress. Adds a layer and breaks up a single block of colour.
With sneakers. Sporty, and more wearable than it sounds.
Colour
A neutral will get worn three times as often as a colour. Beige, blush and black are the ones women tell us become their go-to — beige especially, because it fits into any wardrobe and any style.
Buy the neutral first. Add colour once you know how often you reach for it.
