New to Hijab? What to Buy First

Starting hijab is expensive if you buy the wrong things first. Here's what actually matters in the first month.

Buy these first

Three or four jersey hijabs. Jersey grips without pins. In the first weeks, when wrapping is unfamiliar and slow, that removes most of the frustration. Black, one neutral, one you like.

Three undercaps. Non-negotiable. Chiffon slides on hair and doesn't slide on cotton. Everything else works better with one underneath.

Straight pins and a few magnets. Pins for chiffon, magnets for jersey. You'll lose both.

That's it for week one. Under fifty dollars, and enough to get dressed every day.

What can wait

Chiffon. Beautiful, and harder to control when you're learning. Buy it once jersey feels easy.

Organza and occasion pieces. Buy when you have an occasion.

Large multipacks. Tempting, and you don't yet know which colours you'll reach for. Though if you want to skip the learning curve on colour, a set of twenty is the cheapest way to find out what suits you.

The mistakes that cost most

Buying cheap chiffon. The slippery satin-chiffon at fast-fashion prices doesn't grip, and you'll conclude you can't wrap. You can — the fabric can't.

Skipping the undercap. Nearly everything people struggle with in the first month is solved by one.

Buying short. Under 170cm limits you to one or two styles. 85 x 180cm opens up the rest.

Buying twelve colours before you know your neutrals. You'll wear three of them.

How many you need

Enough that you're not washing daily. Five to seven working hijabs is comfortable — one or two in the wash, the rest in rotation.

What nobody tells you

It takes about two weeks before wrapping stops being a decision. Everyone is slow at first. That isn't a sign you've bought wrong.

And most women end up owning several fabrics because they do different jobs — jersey for a four-minute morning, chiffon for an occasion, modal for a long day. That isn't indecision.
